Invitation for active participation in the NFDI4Earth consortium (National Research Data Infrastructure in Earth System Sciences)
|
Within the framework of the DFG call for proposals for the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the scientific data stocks are to be systematically developed, sustainably secured and made accessible to a broad community. This is to be achieved through a process driven by the scientifc community. The NFDI4Earth - a consortium of Earth System Research currently being formed - would like to actively participate in the National Research Data Infrastructure and invites other actors to participate.

New homepages for CPEX-LAB and JOYCE-CF
|
The Laboratory for Clouds and Precipitation Exploration (CPEX-LAB) has launched its new homepage, which also integrates the homepage of the DFG Core Facility JOYCE-CF. CPEX-LAB pools the existing competence within Geoverbund ABC/J for a better understanding and prediction of clouds and precipitation in the Earth system by using passive and active remote sensing.

ABC/J Excursion to Oman 2020: Apply now!
|
Apply now for one of a total of 20 ABC/J scholarships for the Oman Excursion! Closing date is 31 October 2019. The interdisciplinary excursion will focus on geoscientific and geographical topics such as the transition in Earth (geology), landscape (coasts, deserts, oases, flora & fauna) and society (history, archaeology, cultural development, climate change & agriculture).

The 2019 ABC/J Summer Festival and General Meeting will take place on 5 July 2019 at Uni Cologne starting at 2 pm (Geo-/Bio-Auditorium and Institute of Geology and Mineralogy in Zülpicher Straße). This year's highlights: The award ceremony of the Geoverbund ABC/J Young Academics Award 2019 and the keynote "Mentoring of Early Career Scientists – Chances and Barriers in Tackling Africa‘s Grand Challenges” by Prof. Joy Obando, Kenyatta University. All Geoverbund ABC/J members, professors, academic staff, and students, are cordially invited! We kindly ask for prior registration.

NFDI4Earth: 3rd Plenary Meeting from 17-18 June 2019 in Göttingen
|
Within the framework of the NFDI4Earth consortium, Geoververbund ABC/J is committed to the development of a National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in the field of Earth system sciences. The consortium is still open and invites all interested institutions to participate. From 17-18 June 2019 the 3rd meeting of the NFDI4Earth Plenum will take place in Göttingen.

Fall School Terrestrial Modelling and High-Performance Scientific Computing 2019: Register now!
|
The competence centre HPSC TerrSys offers a fall school in Terrestrial Modelling and High-Performance Scientific Computing from 23-27 September 2019 in Bonn, Germany. The objectives of this applied course is to provide the theoretical and technical context of HPSC-environments utilizing stand-alone and coupled hydrologic, land surface and atmospheric models. The course is aimed at Master and PhD students as well as PostDocs and application is open until 3 June 2019.

Geodetic colloquium in summer semester 2019
|
The geodetic study programmes of the University of Bonn and the DVW NRW e.V., Gesellschaft für Geodäsie, Geoinformation und Landmanagement, invite all colleagues and friends of geodesy to the geodetic colloquium in summer semester 2019. Also this year exciting lectures on geodetic topics will take place at 4 p.m. c.t. at the Institute for Geodesy and Geoinformation, Nussallee 17, 53115 Bonn, Germany. After the colloquia the opportunity for a casual (post-) discussion will be provided in the foyer of the institute with snacks and drinks.

OutcropWizard - mobile outcrop database
|
With the free "OutcropWizard" app, users can find special geological sights that provide insights into the history of the Earth. The mobile outcrop database was first programmed in a master thesis and will now be further developed. The project receives more than 71,000 euros from the Klaus Tschira Foundation, which supports the project for one year.

A Bridge to Africa: follow-up reports on the PASCAL project (The Pan-African Soil Challenge)
|
Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres are currently reporting on the PASCAL project and Geoverbund ABC/J's Africa strategy. PASCAL has won a main prize in the DFG International Research Marketing Ideas Competition and is a joint project of Geoverbund ABC/J, the HPSC TerrSys Competence Centre, the International Soil Modeling Consortium (ISMC), and Forschungszentrum Jülich.
